Dylan's First Day of School

Today Dylan started kindergarden. It was a complete madhouse!!! We all walked him to school and got to see his classroom. There's a "surf shack" and he's got his own locker!

bombin' the gods

For Father's Day this year Kim got me a Lush Longboard - Bahari and I decided to take it with me to Colorado Springs while I was there for training. I was going back and forth over whether I should take it or not and decided at the last minute to go ahead and bring it along. I am SOOOO glad I did!!!

This is the first downhill I shot. It was near my hotel on a low trafficked road. It was a perfect warmup for what the runs I took on Wednesday at the Garden of the Gods. This road was semi-rough and helped keep my speed down so I could work on carving and sliding. About 3/4's of the way down I was able to shoot into the shopping center and even out and cruise until I got the cahones up to bomb the entire hill. That was one hell of a run! But nothing compared to what was to come on Wednesday!!!

I bailed on class a little early on Wednesday and headed over to the mall near my hotel in the hopes of running across a skate shop or something similar. Initially, I was thinking I'd just run the hills by the hotel a few more times and go see a movie or something. Well, when I wandered into skate/snowboard shop in the mall and started asking some of the staff where some good places to skate were they suggested I head over to the Garden of the Gods. It was the best suggestion ever!!!

So now after some incredible downhill runs I am ready to tackle Steiner!!!

Coconut Red Curry Soup

One of my daily reads is Tree Hugger. Today they posted a receipe of the week that sounds really good. The cookbook this is from can be purchased on Amazon

Coconut Red Curry Soup with Butternut Squash and Lime

1 small butternut squash
4 tsp peanut oil
1 cup minced onions
2 garlic cloves, minced
4 pieces galangal or slices fresh ginger
Grated zest and juice of 1 large lime
¼ tsp turmeric
1 to 2 tsp Thai red chili paste
4 cups vegetable stock
Sea salt
¼ cup cilantro leaves
2 tbsp basil leaves, thinly sliced
1 can light coconut milk
1 10 oz carton soft tofu

1. Peel the squash with a vegetable peeler, halve and scoop out the seeds, then dice into ½ cubes.
2. Warm the oil in a wide soup pot. Add the onion, squash, garlic, galangal, lime zest and turmeric. Cook over medium high heat, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes, then add the chili paste.
3. Add ½ cup water and scrape pot to dilute the paste, then add stock and ½ tsp salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot and simmer for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, dice the tofu into small cubes and prepare the cilantro and basil.
4. Add the coconut milk to the soup, followed by the tofu. Simmer until the soup is hot again and the tofu is warmed through, about 5 minutes. Taste for salt, adding more if necessary. Add the cilantro and basil, and squeeze in the juice from the lime.

Serves 4-6

This recipe is from This Can’t be Tofu! by Deborah Madison.

Warp 10 Mr Zulu!

So I was reading some techie website last week when I came across an article about the US military looking into a hyperspace propulsion system. I started reading the Register article and followed the link to the explanation and damn if this isn't the coolest stuff ever!

I read the NewScientist article and kept thinking the hyperdrive device they were describing was alot like the one from Contact with Jodi Foster. Sometime I really love being a geek!

We all love going for hikes on the trails near our house. However, "the princess" has the best seat in the house!!
